Web-based application that uses games to improve cognitive abilities. Provides information about memory, brain health and cognition.

Our Review

Lumosity is an application that creates games designed to improve cognition–learning, information retention and retrieval, thinking speed and overall cognitive alertness. While it’s difficult to imagine how your brain will function when you are eighty years old and possibly less sharp from all the environmental toxins and having raised two kids, it is not a terrible idea to start improving your cognitive function by playing games in your downtime. I personally love the Spatial Speed Match game as it really forces me to focus remembering symbols I am unfamiliar with.

What people like

  • Can play anywhere, anytime on tablets or computers.
  • Every game is designed for improving a certain function.
  • 90% of users according to Luminosity report improved attention span. Children with ADHD have improved memories.

What people dislike

  • Most of the games test thinking and reacting speed. Where are the games that test vocabulary and overall knowledge?
  • Does not provide games that improve critical thinking, a major aspect of cognitive capability.
  • Difficult to accurately test real improvement in memory and thinking.
  • $14.95 per month or a reduced price of $6.95 for a full year commitment…is it worth it with an abundance of other games in the market designed to improve cognition?

While a subscription to a site that provides games that make you “smarter” and a “faster thinker” may be tempting at first, consider other games that may improve your memory and overall cognitive capabilities. Sudoku, Words with Friends scrabble, crossword puzzles and other games that train memory, attention span and knowledge in combination are free of charge. For example, the game scrabble demands use of one’s lexicon and spatial reasoning. For $14.95 per month if you do not wish to commit to a year-long contract, is it really worth it to subscribe for games you can find for free? Reason I unsubscribed: practicality.
